Day 9 - 3/16
This morning we set off for St. George’s market. St. George’s market was full of food and craft stalls for us to peruse. We were able to purchase plenty of souvenirs to take home with them, like vintage cigarette boxes, scarves, and jewelry. Afterward, we made our way to the Titanic Belfast museum.
The walk there was filled with familiar landmarks. We caught another glimpse of the SS Nomadic, which ferried first and second class passengers to board the Titanic. Stained glass pieces related to Game of Thrones series dotted our walk as well, which was mentioned on the bus tour earlier this week. Some students even saw a proposal!
The Titanic museum documented the creation and demise of the ship. We got to walk through a history of Belfast at the time of the Titanic and the importance of the ship, as it created many jobs for those in Belfast. We experienced a short ride where we got to hear about some of the work from the laborers themselves.
The museum showed us different aspects of the ship, right down to the view from the first class deck and the carpeting in the cabins. It did a wonderful job honoring those who worked on and were lost in this disastrous maritime event. Every surface and aspect paid homage to the event. For example, the exterior mimicked the sheer presence of the Titanic, measuring out to be the same height as the bow of the ship.
After grabbing some lunch, we split to make the most of their last full day in Ireland. Some of us did not have enough of Ireland and went hunting for more souvenirs to bring home to loved ones. We also had students make the most of their day by catching up on some much needed rest. Some students went above and beyond, coordinating dinner and a surprise for the rest of the group. We finished off the day by holding one more group dinner at Frankie and Benny’s and swapped stories and adventures one last time. We even gave thank you cards to our amazing chaperones because the trip would not have been the same without them. After filling our stomachs and reminiscing on the trip, we headed home to pack and prepare for the long travel day ahead of us.
